Which MCB and Wire Size Do You Need for a Geyser?

Winter is coming and geysers are going back on. A geyser is one of the heaviest loads in a home, so it needs the right MCB, wire, switch and socket. Undersized parts heat up, trip often or, worse, become a fire risk. Here is a simple guide.

Step 1: Check your geyser's wattage

Look at the rating sticker on the geyser. Most storage geysers (10–25 litre) are 2 kW; some are 3 kW. Instant geysers (1–6 litre) are often 3 kW to 4.5 kW. Current drawn is roughly watts ÷ 230:

  • 2 kW geyser ≈ 8.7 A
  • 3 kW geyser ≈ 13 A
  • 4.5 kW instant geyser ≈ 19.6 A

Step 2: Pick the MCB, wire, switch and socket

Geyser MCB Copper wire Switch & socket
Up to 2 kW (storage) 16 A 2.5 sq mm 16 A
3 kW (storage / instant) 16 A (20 A for long runs, with 4 sq mm wire) 2.5 sq mm (4 sq mm for long runs) 16 A
4.5 kW (instant) 25 A 4 sq mm Hard-wired or 25 A rated point

The golden rule: the MCB must never be rated higher than the wire can safely carry. A 32 A MCB on 2.5 sq mm wire will not protect that wire.

Step 3: Add earth-leakage protection

Bathrooms combine water and electricity. Make sure the geyser circuit is protected by an RCCB or RCBO (30 mA) in your distribution board, and that the geyser is properly earthed. This protects people, not just wires.

Step 4: Use a dedicated circuit

Give the geyser its own MCB rather than sharing a circuit with lights or other sockets. It makes tripping easier to diagnose and keeps the load within limits.
